Visualizing the connections between the artists, the community, and influences at the Jane Addams Hull-House
The project focused on deciphering, extracting, structuring, connecting and modeling the various forms of information it has about the artists who played a vital role in injecting humanity into the working community it served. Apart from the information handling and maintaining the data for connections, my role in this project was to develop the visuals and work on the final output of the buildings of the complex.
To address the panel discussion next fall at the Hull-House, a Chicago’s immigrant community established by social reformers Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr and to guide the researchers of their ongoing activity, the goal of the visualization was to demonstrate the breadth and depth of their artist and the art program practiced in the settlement and connections between artists working in shared physical environments within the Hull-House complex.
The research included the information about the various artists existed in various textual forms, from oral histories, newspaper articles, brochures, books and other written sources.
Concept sketch post hypothesis of the research to depict multi-level connections between the artists and location.
Stage 1: Early prototype to create tangible connections to play around with visual placement and information hierarchy.
Stage 2: Adaptation of the building of the Hull-House complex to a smaller scale to build visible connections
Final Stage: Development of the visual along with the required researched information. We used the space on the complex surfaces and the plan to depict the art programs that ran in the respective buildings for multi-layer information handling by the viewers.
In order to give the complex a more realistic and old photographic look, we hand-printed wood paintings. The buildings were stuck with magnets on the visualization for relation mapping and interactive learning experience for the viewers.
